Contemporary Critical Approaches to Literature

by Lee Ann Mortensen, Professor at Utah Valley State College

"'Yearning'" is the word that best describes a common psychological state shared by many of us, cutting across boundaries of race, class, gender, and sexual practice. Specifically in relation to the postmodernist deconstruction of "master" narratives, the yearning that wells in the hearts and minds of those whom such narratives have silenced is the longing for critical voice." bell hooks "Postmodern Blackness"

In this post-structural and postmodernism criticism course we will examine some of the most important contemporary theorists that give so many of us a voice like bell hooks, Judith Butler, Jean Baudrillard, Roland Barthes, and Jaque Derrida.  We will also examine (and enjoy) some of the most important contemporary authors (who also give us voice) like Salman Rushdie, Jeanette Winterson, and Donald Barthelme.
