I see that some people have their research listed on the main page, along with a picture. How do I get listed there?
You may have noticed that someone's research is featured prominently on the main page and on the school pages. It's a very nice way to pull visitors to your site, and everyone should look into being listed there. Since there is room for only one listing, the one listed is drawn randomly from the applicable pool of researchers that want to be listed there. For example, anyone who wants can be listed (randomly) on the first page, but only member of the School of Business are listed on the School of Business page.
At the bottom of the admin page, after you log in, is a section dealing with the menu system. There are several options. Here is a copy, with annotations in red and missing form boxes in green:
Menu System: You may come back and change these at any time after your account is approved.
Altering these settings will not change your physical directories in any way; they are only used in the home page menu system.
Display Directory in Menu System: <CHECKBOX> (http://research.uvsc.edu/YourDir)
Clearing the check box above will remove your directory from the menu, but your directory and its
content will remain intact, as will your FTP and web access to it. Please leave the box above unchecked
until you have content uploaded and your website is ready to go live.
No matter what you've entered below, if the above checkbox is not checked your website will not be listed anywhere. If you don't have a website uploaded, for goodness sake don't check the box! We don't want to sent visitors to an error page.
If you have used the site for a while and choose to not list it for a time, unchecking the box will not delete any files or change any account information. This box pertains to your listing in the menu system only.
Title: Titles and descriptions below are encouraged, but optional.
Description or Abstract (1500 characters max.):
<BIG TEXT BOX>
<CHECKBOX>Check here if your description contains HTML formatting codes.
If you have HTML codes in your description, ones that set paragraphs, bold or italic typeface, lists, then check this box and cut and paste the code itself (not the formatted 'normal' view) from your html editor to the box.
Any description longer than 1500 characters long, including html coding, is truncated with an ellipsis ("...").
Always try to include a title and description of your research. The description can be searched by the menu search engine, so you might want to work in some obvious keywords. Make your title interesting enough to draw visitors to your link.
Link: If you would rather have the menu link to content you have on another site,
copy the link into the box below. Leave blank of you use this server for content.
Include the "http://" as part of the link text.
If you have content on another server already, you don't need to move it. Instead include the full link here and visitors will be taken to your site when they click. You can also use this box if you don't want to use one of the default document names (default.htm or index.html), instead pointing to the full URL of your homepage.
The Front Page
If you have a particularly nice graphic representing your research, you can have your name,
the description of your research (from the title and description box above) and the graphic displayed
in a random rotation on the Research Server front page, and on the School menu pages.
Just check this box: <CHECKBOX> and enter the web link to the image (include the http://):
The image should be no larger than 160x160 pixels, in .png, .gif or .jpg form.
Make sure you also click the "display directory in menu system" box above, so your entry will be visible!
Here is where you indicate that you want to be listed on the front page, or on your School page. You do not need to include a graphic, but it sure helps attract visitors. If you select this box, be sure to select the box at the top of the menu system, too!
