Europe 2002

This page provides links to stories and photographs from a number of bicycle rides over passes in the Italian Dolomites, Italian Alps and French Alps. The roads through the passes of these mountains hold a number of attractions for cyclists and geologists.  Many geological discoveries, perhaps especially in structural geology and tectonics, were made in the European Alps. In fact, a great deal of geological and mountain terminology comes from the region, including dolomite, Jurassic, alpine and others.  The roads are beautifully engineered and constructed to deal with the steep topography and abundant geologic hazards.  The steepness and duration of the climbs also is remarkable, and virtually unmatched in North America.  And last, but certainly not least to a fan of cycling, many epic battles of the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, fought by the likes of Coppi, Bartali, Merckx, Anquetil, Hinault, Lemond, and Armstrong have been played out on these cols and passi of France and Italy.
